Thanks to the theological writings and spiritual observations of Emanuel Swedenborg, the world has been given a detailed look at the spiritual environments of both heaven and hell.
Swedenborg learned from direct experience that neither hell nor heaven is some “place” you go to after death. Each reality is reached by what an individual has become in both heart and mind. For neither heaven nor hell can different from the inner qualities of our spirit.
The atmospheres, landscapes and environments of heaven and hell are diametrically opposed to each other. Swedenborg was made aware of this dynamic when he was allowed to witness a spirit from hell enter into heaven.
Soon upon entering the loving sphere of heaven, Swedenborg watched the evil spirit begin to become nauseous and fall into a swoon. You see, a spirit’s non-physical body is organized around the quality and preferences of their heart and ruling love. Therefore, when someone enters the realm of angels and who inwardly loves deceit, cruelty or adulteries, that individual experiences real torment by the warm and loving atmosphere of heaven—which rejects all evil intentions.
In heaven, an evil person’s life is smothered.
It was not until this particular evil spirit was brought back to his hellish abode that he recovered his senses (and his evil lifestyle). While evil spirits in hell are indeed tormented by the consequences of their own evil acts, at least in hell, they find a world where these evil acts are accepted and sought after. That is why they would suffer more in heaven than they do in hell.
So then, while you are still living on this earth, it is extremely important to ask yourself “What do you really intend?”
