His most recent book, "Swedenborg & Gurdjieff: The Missing Links" is an edgy collection of anti-intuitive essays for personal transformation that challenges and inspires. He has been a student of the ideas of both Emanuel Swedenborg and George I. Gurdjieff for over thirty years. Read more about TheGodGuy, his books and his ideas at http://www.staircasepress.com

What happens to people like Stephen Hawking in the afterlife – do they remain atheists? Swedenborg indicates that it is possible for people to be atheists in the afterlife. God is experienced as spiritual light and warmth in the afterlife, which atheists can attribute to “natural” phenomena, albeit of a different order of nature/reality. Maybe atheists make it to the “natural heaven”. Even then, they might be able to deny the existence of God.

    Dear Roger,

Swedenborg seems to suggest that merely entering the spiritual world after the death of the physical body doesn’t persuade atheists to change their deep-seated convictions. A person (or spirit) forms his or her worldview from the quality of their heart (Ruling Love), so it becomes the very fabric and life of their being! Evil spirits simply become more belligerent if shown proof that things are otherwise. Spirits in the lowest or natural heaven submit to the laws of fairness and justice – at least from simple obedience. Those spirits who embrace a hidden or deceptive motive cannot even endure the simple kindness of the lowest heaven.

  3. Roger says:

    Dear Edward,

What do you mean by, “from simple obedience”? Is obedience out of fear of spiritual (not material) consequences included in this category? If I refrain from stealing not out of love for God or my neighbor BUT because I am afraid to go to hell (rather than because I am afraid to go to jail, losing my job and being shamed before family and friends), then am I practicing an acceptable form of “simple obedience”?

    Thanks,

    Roger

  4. thegodguy says:

    Dear Roger,

If you want me to thread a needle I’d say that proper simple obedience comes from a principle of concern for others – not for oneself. Hiding one’s propensities from the world does not save a person’s soul. It is one’s propensities (loves) that come to the surface in the other world and form an individual’s spiritual reality. We must not only resist non-noble actions during our terrestrial life we must grow to detest them. Those of the lowest heavens have simple and sincere civility (minus the motive for deception).

  5. Bengt de Paulis says:

Stephen Hawkins is expert in the Physical World.

Swedenborg discovered the Real World behind the Physical.

    So many proofs exist:

    Dear Bengt,

Stephen Hawking is not even an expert of the physical world. As my book “Proving God” demonstrates, both Swedenborg’s science and theology offer greater insights into the real world.

Thanks for sharing your information with my readers!

    Spiritually yours,
    TheGodGuy
