Children and angels make all things alive!

As children we all drew pictures of the sun with bright eyes and a big happy smile. As we grew up we also watched cartoons where rocks, cars and houses not only became living objects, they became humanlike. Everything in this enchanted inner world of imagination, including trees and animals could talk and show real human emotion!

According to scientist/theologian Emanuel Swedenborg, in the spiritual world, this ability to bring human life to all objects and things was intensified by the angels.

He also claimed that there was once a universal science on earth, which enabled the human mind to make new truth-discoveries precisely through a mental process of vivification, by which all things became elevated to living objects, taking on features of human life, and even divine life. It was called the science of correspondences.

This science was based on the premise that everything in the physical world contained a natural meaning, a mental meaning and ultimately a Divine meaning. On one level, a house was just a house, but on a higher level it could represent and signify a human mind (with all the things inside the house symbolizing specific ideas, beliefs and values of that particular mind). Windows and doors represented portals, which served to introduce these things to the mind. Psychologically speaking, a “bed” represented the ideas and beliefs that provided us with the greatest calm, comfort and rest.

A home is not only where the heart is, a home is the heart (or human will).

On a higher theological level (that is, if the human mind is elevated further upwards), this same house can represent God’s house, or church, because everything in it can also signify heavenly and doctrinal things, which give shelter to our soul.

Even the relatively unimaginative human minds of adults still take part, more or less, in making the objects of the physical world become living objects. When the human eye sees an object, it must be transferred to the brain (and mind) as an idea – and everything mental is alive. In other words, when we internalize the things we observe in nature, they gain increased dynamics. Thinking is a living process, so all our ideas are equally organic and alive. In fact, our thoughts and feelings express our deepest living reality.

This is why Swedenborg personally observed in the Spiritual World a most amazing holistic phenomenon—that every quality of a spirit or angel’s heart and mind is reflected outwards to create one’s psycho-scape (spiritual environment). Therefore, in the other world, one finds his or her final abode and spiritual biosphere to be the perfect expression of who they really are!

By the way, those who become angelic beings enjoy a special Sun that is the source of all life and happiness. Instead of giving off physical heat and light, it emanates God’s infinite Love (spiritual warmth) and Wisdom (spiritual light).

It is the loving and illuminating influence of this Holy Sun, flowing into the unspoiled minds and innocence of young children, that causes them to instinctively put smiles on their drawings of our physical sun and believe that all things in the universe can convey universal humanness.
