In my attempt to unify science and theology, the overall strategy of my next book Proving God is to show that the spiritual dynamics of Love is the key to solving the mystery of agency in the manifest universe. My secondary strategy is to show that the laws of physics follow the template and patterning principles hidden within in the multidimensional architecture of Sacred Scripture.
Divine action must be consistent with physics, because physics has its origins in God’s creative action (which is the Word). The physical laws of the universe are simply spiritual laws put into the constraints of time and space.
But how does one provide detailed and convincing arguments for basing the origins of physical laws in metaphysical principles when some of science’s best theories may be flawed? And whose theology do I use? I cannot put my hopes in uniting an inadequate theology to a flawed scientific theory.
Take quantum physics. The indeterminate or uncertain quantum world generates the determinate and measurable world of observation. If an infinitely wise God is at the bottom of this, then quantum uncertainty must represent epistemological ignorance rather than ontological reality. But most quantum physicists tend to believe that action in the micro-world is random and statistical rather than purposeful.
However, randomness presents us with an illogical and unsatisfactory causal principle for explaining nature’s unceasing drive for self-organization. Can the order, orientation, and unity of the universe, be a statistical by-product of randomness?
The invisible world of possibilities has ordered structure. Since this invisible a priori realm is nearer to God and what is infinite it must also be closer in perfection to divine order. According to the scientist/theologian Emanuel Swedenborg, the Second Coming will involve the Lord returning to remove our epistemological ignorance concerning the infinite richness of Scripture. Without such a “revelation” we could never hope to gain possession of a theology that is adequate enough to respond to the New Physics.
Within the spacetime narratives of Holy Scripture the Lord will reveal higher, more expanded orders of meaning based on spiritual metrics and pre-space dynamical magnitudes. For example, in Revelation 19:11 it reads:
And I saw heaven opened; and behold a white horse; and He that sitteth upon him is called faithful and true; and in justice He doth judge and make war.
To have heaven opened to someone (John) represents a quantum jump into a higher cognitive function so that deeper mysteries of faith can be grasped from the Holy Word. It is these new doctrines and teachings from heaven that the Lord will use to make war.
And out of his mouth went forth a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations Rev. 19:15.
Translating the literal words into a more expanded quantum interpretation, the “sword coming out of the Lord’s mouth” conveys not an anger to kill people, but cutting through the doctrinal obscurities of our faith systems with more sharply forged teachings.
The Second Coming will unfold within a psycho-topological backdrop. That is, within the inner landscape of our hearts and minds.
Would you be open to such a novel paradigm shift?
