God’s Super Bowl

Super Bowl Sunday is probably one of the single biggest sports events in the world. Its outcome will decide who is the best football team in the NFL.

God also has prepared a Super Bowl for us. It will be the biggest contest the world has ever seen. The outcome will determine whether God’s team wins or the Devil’s team. Like football, God’s Super Bowl will be a violent contact sport. People will get hurt.

Scripture refers to this cosmic event as the Apocalypse or Judgment Day.

While it is easy for people to identify their favorite football team, because of the different colors of the uniforms, it is much more difficult to identify God’s team from that of the opposition. Many people assume that by calling themselves Christians, they can easily distinguish God’s team from that of the great dragon and the other beasts.

But according to scientist/theologian, Emanuel Swedenborg, many Christians end up rooting for—and even playing for—the wrong team.

How does one confuse a dragon with God? It would seem that their difference is so obvious that they do not need to wear different uniforms to let us know who is who.

The reason Swedenborg gives for this confusion is that God’s Super Bowl, unlike the Super Bowl XLIII (and those that preceded it), will not take place in the physical world. The arena in which this great spiritual contest takes place is the human heart and mind! In this arena, love fights with truth and evil fights with falsity.

In other words, the Lord’s return takes place within our hearts and minds—to rid us of any false notions that distort God’s truth and are detrimental to salvation. These false notions arise from not recognizing that God’s Holy Word is a multidimensional document that contains higher meanings within its literal sense.

Swedenborg identifies two of the biggest false Christian notions as; the idea that God is three Persons, and, the doctrine of salvation by faith alone. As to the first, Swedenborg says that Jesus was Jehovah in the flesh and that the Holy Spirit represents God’s endeavor to save mankind. God is one divine PERSON, consisting of three qualities – divine love, divine truth, and divine action. Jesus represented God’s truth because, by taking on a human body, He became visible to humankind. Truth makes love visible.

As to the second false Christian idea, the doctrine of salvation by faith alone, this notion entered into the psyche of the Christian world from a misinterpretation of Paul’s words in Romans 3:28, that “man is justified by faith without the works of law.” Paul was commenting on the laws pertaining to Jewish customs, NOT THE COMMANDMENTS. Evidence for this is that Jesus never refutes the importance of the commandments and even makes them more understandable by putting them under the simpler formula of loving God and loving the neighbor. This is also why Jesus states:

Because I live, ye shall live also; in that day ye shall know that I am in the Father, and ye in Me, and I in you; he that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me. (John 14:19-21)

Further evidence that Paul was misinterpreted is his statement in 1 Cor. 13:13:

Now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

True religion has to do with love, not simply belief. Love is faith put into action. Faith without love is impotent and simply head-faith, which makes religion abstracted from life.

What takes place in God’s Super Bowl represents the ultimate contact sport. Man’s spirit is his heart and mind. The Second Coming represents the Lord’s efforts to make deeper and more profound contact with us— through our spirit. This deeper contact cannot take place unless our false notions are removed, notions that may have been implanted at a young age and taken root.

However, those who resist will be playing for the opposing team. The dragons and dreadful beasts symbolize one’s inner resistance to change and the continued defense of belief-systems that have turned God’s truth into doctrinal monstrosities.

When we find this out, the true meaning of Revelation becomes revealed to us. That is why the Lord makes His return in the “midst of clouds.” Clouds represent mental obscurity concerning true doctrine. It is through this religious fog that the Lord wishes to emerge—to reveal His true glory.

The Second Coming is taking place right now, to those who are open to receiving new teachings from the Lord God.

Please share your thoughts. These ideas are difficult for many Christians to embrace.

Very, very awesome! You go Godguy. I am with ya.
Sorry for so many responses related to Mary Baker Eddy and Science and Health but I didn’t realize all the blogs were yours. I still think you would like her book big time though.
I am still thinking about your reminder( in the other blog) that Adam never woke up and that Christ or Truth or The Lord does awaken man. I am listening everyday for “revelations” in thought(the Christ coming to consciousness). Telling me who I am as the reflection, expression, image and likeness of Love.
Thanks much for your great thoughts.

    Dear Joyce,

Thanks again for your positive response.

The idea that Adam never wakes up and that other narratives in Scripture warn us to “sleep not” takes up a whole chapter in my upcoming book “Proving God.” The chapter puts forth the idea that humankind exists in a state of TRANCE, until we take steps to begin our spiritual evolution. The modern world, with all its vanities and allurements, offers many proofs that the human race is highly susceptible to “suggestibility.”

    Spiritually yours,
