We usually think of the world of visible phenomena as operating on a backdrop of time and space. But time and space and all the physical things that take place within this realm of measurement and duration must have had the same origin. Most physicists will tell you that the Big Bang was not merely an explosive distribution of energy and momentum into space and time but it was the creation of time, space, energy, matter and law itself.
When one considers that the birth of the universe took place in a cosmic womb (singularity) where there was no space, time or law, one is faced with the task of identifying the causal agency and dynamical nature of a non-physical and non-temporal initial condition capable of generating the awesome fruitfulness that we observe in the manifest cosmos.
So even scientists will agree that first causal principles, which constituted the special initial conditions of a prenatal universe, must have their existence and domain in a non-physical realm. Physical time and space was derived from a pregeometrical, ontologically real world. Religion refers to this non-physical reality as the Spiritual world.
The only way we can translate this spiritual reality into scientific language (and a scientifically plausible theory) is to somehow grasp how dynamical process and order can exist totally removed (abstracted) from any involvement with time and space.
Religion tells us that a God of Infinite Wisdom and Love reigns over this pregeometric world. How can we picture kinetic processes and real forms in non-physical states? How can there be difference, measurement and ratio in such a reality?
To put this question into scientific terms we need to come to an answer of what fundamental “stuff” is. The scientific answer is a theological answer—that love is primal substance. Love is the primal creative formative substance from which all forms (and kinetics) are derived. All coherent forms represent God’s Truth—the measurement, ratios, organization and dynamical process coming forth out of Love’s endeavor to find formal existence.
To put this back into strict theological terms not only does God love, God is Love. Love at its essence is being, that is, living, intelligent substance. If God is everywhere (even before the creation of the world), then Divine Love is non-material space. We intuitively understand this when we speak of a loving and giving person as “big” and a selfish person as being “small.” Love has magnitudes! The magnitudes of love are its measure (the truth of that love).
Truth is non-physical form, measurement (non-physical extension) and ratio. Truth and all its varieties are the first forms love takes in its top-down endeavor to find material existence. This top-down process (spiritual causality) finds stable form and coherent structure in the inert matter and dynamical processes of the physical world. Truth is non-physical time because its coming forth from love is non-temporal duration, which has its physical analog as process and change in the visible phenomenal world.
The “arrow of time” and nature’s incessant drive to find stability, formalism, and coherence in organized dynamical forms consisting of profound mutual relationships (unities) is evidence that the created world gets its marching orders from God’s Love, God’s Truth, and God’s purposeful spiritual activity.
