The Origin Of Information

When an astrophysicist looks out into the universe he or she will observe a world that has order and orientation. Not only does the universe supply us with information but with laws that are recognizable to the human mind as being profoundly rational (otherwise the universe would not be intelligible).

Moving from the larger scale of the cosmos to the smaller scale of microbiology, scientists have discovered that at the fundamental level of biological process deep inside the living cell, there are systems that arrange information with the precision of a human mind when it arranges words into sentences and sentences into paragraphs.

A simple living cell has a complete mastery of science! A living cell innately contains all the information it needs to manipulate information “wisely” and in “intelligent” ways.

A big mystery to Scientists is the question “where does this information come from?” While more and more scientists are becoming less fearful of pointing to the possibility that an architect-God is responsible, no theology is adequate enough to offer a plausible scientific model.

Enter scientist/theologian Emanuel Swedenborg. He presented the world with new ways of looking at God from a scientific perspective. For instance, most religions will testify that God is Love itself and Truth itself. Swedenborg’s insight was that “love” and “truth” could be put into scientific language.

For instance, Truth differentiates. Truth allows us to discern one thing from another, such as proportions, ratios, forms, and dynamical magnitudes. So information has its origins in Divine Truth.

But what information does God’s Truth actually represent? According to Swedenborg, Divine Truth represents the proportions, ratios, forms, and dynamical magnitudes of God’s Love. Love as living essence (agency) finds its existence in forms of truth. Form and information are synonymous.

Furthermore, the essence of love is the endeavor to unite. So God’s creative activity consists of differentiating and uniting. All coherent organizations and systems, including bio-complexity, consist of increased differentiation promoting increased unity. So nature’s incessant endeavor to find coherent existence is the process of bringing forth increased information through patterns of integrated complexity.

The tiny living cell gets its power to form combinations of information into a molecular arrangement from God’s original and perpetual endeavor to differentiate and unify (the perfection of unity through diversity). Information can be combined in profound ways because all forms of truth have their origins in Love, and are therefore related. So new forms of complexification are possible because information can agree and be combined according to disposition and need.

This is just a small taste of what my new book Proving God covers in a rational attempt to unify science and theology. It will be available Spring 2010 – just before Easter.

Award-winning author of "Sermon From the Compost Pile: Seven Steps Toward Creating An Inner Garden" and "Proving God," which fulfills a continuing vision that God’s fingerprints of love can be found everywhere in the manifest universe. His most recent book, "Swedenborg & Gurdjieff: The Missing Links" is an edgy collection of anti-intuitive essays for personal transformation that challenges and inspires. He has been a student of the ideas of both Emanuel Swedenborg and George I. Gurdjieff for over thirty years. Read more about TheGodGuy, his books and his ideas at
