The Angel and the “Changeling.”

Once upon a time there was a unique man who could change into anything he wanted. He had developed such powers of mind over matter that he could change into a rock, a tree, any kind of animal or even a handsome bachelor. He was a changeling or what some others call a shape-shifter.

His name was Frank. But he was very sad.

He was once famous and very rich for his abilities to change and completely fool people. But like everything else, the world eventually grew bored of him and his various disguises and no longer believed him to be special. Now Frank could only find employment in circus sideshows. Sometimes the circus would allow Frank to change into a clown so that he could increase his hourly wage.

Frank was desperate to become important again. But no matter what he tried to change into he could not change his life circumstances.

On this particular day Frank’s depression was so severe that he could not bear going out one more time to perform for the circus crowds who called him “Frank the fake.” Things became so desperate that he did something he had never done before. He prayed to God for help.

Suddenly, a beautiful angel appeared before him. She asked, “Why are you so sad?”

At first Frank could not believe his eyes but he was so desperate to change his situation that he engaged the heavenly helper. “I am a changeling,” he said to the angel. The world no longer is interested in my unique abilities to turn into anything I please.”

“That’s because everyone is a changeling,” she answered. “You are really not special at all.”

Frank raised his eyebrows when he heard this. “You mean I am not unique?” asked the surprised sideshow performer.

“Heck no,” said the angel as if it were a silly question. “Everyone changes all the time. People change when they go to church, when they go to work, when they go to a baseball game, when their mother dies, and especially when no one is looking. In each case they become completely different people.”

“Is there nothing I could change into that would get people to take notice again?” asked the mutable mimicker.

“The only way one can make a real change in one’s life is to change one’s heart,” said the angel with a most serious face. “Only God can help you make that kind of change. Only God can help you change into something better and sincere—a change from mere mimicry to the miraculous.”
