Once upon a time there lived an ordinary fellow named Dudley. Although his outer appearance showed nothing special about him, Dudley had a passion for reading the stories of the Bible.
In fact, he often wished that he could experience visions like those in Daniel, Ezekiel and the Apostle John. Sometimes Dudley even prayed to God to be able to experience such wonders.
Suddenly an angel appeared before him in a flash of brilliant holy light. Dudley’s faith and belief in angels was so strong that he was startled only momentarily.
“Hi,” said the beautiful angel. “I am here to offer you a glimpse of what the Prophets experienced in ancient times.”
“Wow, I’m ready!” said Dudley.
“But I am here to show you more than mere visions. I will also instruct you about their sacred meaning,” said the smiling angel. “Now stand up ”
As Dudley got up from his chair, his mind became elevated as well. He now found himself standing in two worlds at once! “What has happened to me?” asked the totally surprised and disoriented Dudley.
“You are now in both body and spirit. God is simply granting you your wish to experience the visions of the Prophets.”
Dudley noticed that his body and feet were still in his living room but that his spirit was standing in a strange, yet strangely recognizable world. “Why is this other world so strange, yet so familiar to me?” asked Dudley.
“The world of your spirit is actually the world of your heart and mind. Here, all your thoughts and feelings make up the spiritual landscape,” explained the angel. “That is why it is both a strangely different kind of world, yet profoundly familiar.” The angel then lifted her arm and pointed. “Now walk towards your Bible on the desk at the other end of the room.”
As Dudley watched his physical body move closer to his copy of the Bible he noticed that his spirit was walking towards a well of water. The well had a stone lying on top of it. As soon as he opened up the Bible, he also saw his spirit removing the stone from the well.
“You have a strong thirst for truth,” said the angel. “The Holy Word quenches and refreshes the spirit just as water from a well quenches the physical body.”
Dudley then noticed that droves of sheep had gathered with shepherds around his spirit and the well. He instinctively allowed the flock to drink from its special spiritual waters.
“What is the meaning of all this?” inquired Dudley.
“Since the spiritual world is the landscape of your heart and mind the field or ground that your spirit is now standing on represents your worldview and belief system. Simply put, this realm expresses the quality of your faith.”
Dudley then asked, “What does this flock and the shepherds have to do with me or my faith?”
The angel was pleased to hear this question. “These creatures are the living expressions of the things that animate your ideas and feelings. That this flock and its shepherds have come to this sacred well means that your faith is such that your heart and mind receives its teaching, or spiritual waters, directly from a most sacred source—the Lord God’s Holy Word.”
The angel had finished her instruction and Dudley was returned fully back into his physical body and living room with the open Bible still in his hands.
“Before I go, there is one more insight that I can offer you,” said the caring angel. “Look down at the page in the Bible that you turned to. What does it say?”
Dudley looked down and read from Genesis 29, verses 2 and 3:
And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well’s mouth. And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well’s mouth in his place.
Dudley fell back into his chair fully stunned. He now realized that Holy Scripture contained teachings on every page that were divinely designed for both the eyes of the body and eyes of the spirit. The Prophet’s miraculous visions consisted of holy things witnessed by their spiritual eyes!
“How am I going to let the world know about such hidden wonders?” said the now bewildered Dudley.
