Frustrated Angels

Once upon a time there lived two guardian angels in heaven named Gary and Gail. It was their job to watch over a certain human on earth and protect that person from any attacks coming from hell.

One day while they were contemplating all the great works and victorious combats accomplished by the Lord on earth to unify His human imperfections with His Holy Divine Essence and glorify this final unity, they heard a sound like a buzzer in the heavenly atmosphere above.

“Sounds like our host on earth is being attacked by evil spirits,” said Gail as she reacted to the warning alarm.

“Well,” said Gary, “let’s go do battle with those creeps!”

So Gary and Gail descended from heaven down into their host’s psyche and into a special compartment of the host’s memory banks where valuable knowledge was stored concerning the spiritual love and truth that had been experienced in life.

“Lots of good stuff here. This is going to be easy,” said Gail.

“Yeah,” responded Gary as both angels scanned all the valuable spiritual knowledge collected through the efforts of their host’s lifelong study of the Lord’s Holy Word. “There is plenty of material here to work with,” said Gary as he rolled up his sleeves. (You see, since God only fights evil with truth, the sacred data in their host’s memory was the “metal” that the two angels used to forge their weapons.)

Armed and girded by the spiritual knowledge of their host, the two guardian angels came to a large gorge. On the other side of the gorge many evil spirits were exploiting, activating and promoting all the faults and compulsions that they could find in other parts of the earthly host’s memory and experiences. It was a full-blown “toga” party!

“Let’s cross over and repel them!” shouted Gary.

“There’s the Bridge,” said Gail pointing with her arm.

However, when the two angels reached the bridge it had a sign posted on it, which read: “Bridge closed for repair.”

Seeing that the two heavenly angels could not reach and challenge them, the evil spirits were inspired to drive their host into greater despair.

“How is this possible?” said Gary in a frustrated tone.

“Perhaps, we can open our host’s neural connections and channels to see and hear what is going on down there on earth,” said Gary’s resourceful heavenly partner.

After a little neural “tinkering,” the two angels were able to plug into the sounds and sights that their host was experiencing from the terrestrial world.

“It looks like our host is in a church. He is surrounded by people who are offering support, words of encouragement and plenty of hugs,” observed Gail.

“Oh, here comes the minister. Let’s listen to what he has to say,” said Gary, taking extreme interest in how the minister would intervene.

The minister approached the deeply troubled and agitated member of his congregation. “What is the problem?” he asked.

“I am not feeling good about myself,” said the suffering worshipper. “I feel inner conflict and remorse. How do I get rid of this terrible feeling?”

The minister gave his suffering congregational member an encouraging pat on the shoulder, and, with a loving smile shared these words of wisdom. “You are valuable to God. God loves you. God and His heavenly angels will defend and protect you. Never give up your hope.”

As the minister said these words Gary noticed another section of the bridge’s structure fall off. “Oh no!” exclaimed Gary. “That minister is telling our host to do the exact opposite thing that is necessary to remedy the situation.”

“You are right,” said Gail. “Instead of encouraging our host to look deep inside and identify the negative traits that are being stirred up, the minister is offering soothing words and trying to restore his member’s self-esteem. This is nothing more than ‘spiritual chocolate.’”

“Holy Crap! Unless our host is encouraged to use introspection and self-examination there is nothing for us to fight,” said Gary, fully understanding the terrifying nature of this situation. “It is everyone’s cosmic duty to dig up the dirt in their lives. People just can’t always HOPE for God to fix things—in spite of themselves.”

As the two guardian angels shrugged their shoulders and prepared for their next assignment from God they looked back at the crumbling bridge, which was constructed so that a path would be opened up for humans from earth to experience the “clash” of their inner reality. This special bridge like all bridges had a name. It was named INNER SINCERITY.

Yes, even after 5 years in the Writings, and seeing the Word amplified, I still am not practicing this consistently.

“When we are living in kindness and faith, we regret our faults every day. We think about our bad traits, admit them, avoid acting on them, and ask the Lord for help.”
New Jerusalem and Its Heavenly Doctrine 163 Emanuel Swedenborg

    An easier, softer way…….
“You cannot have humility when you love only yourself. Self–love is hard, and love to the Divine is soft. Self–love must be wholly crushed.”
    Spiritual Experiences 4754 Emanuel Swedenborg

“…but as soon as a man on self-examination confesses evils to be sins
against God because they are contrary to Divine laws and accordingly
resolves to desist from them, the Lord opens the spiritual mind, enters
the natural by affections of truth and good, enters the reason, and by
the reason puts into order what is disordered below in the natural. It
is this that strikes the man as a battle, and strikes those who have
indulged much in enjoyments of evil as temptation, for when the order
of its thinking is inverted the lower mind suffers pain.”
    ~Divine Providence 147 Emanuel Swedenborg
[in other words, it is love of wrongdoing that makes separation from it appear to be painful. Later on in my newfound spiritual regeneration (having a new love of good living), ‘lower mind’ is not in as much conflict when temptations are conquered by me with the power and presence of God in & through me. Keith]

“A person who knows all that is good and all that is true – as much as can be known – but does not resist evils, knows nothing.”
    Apocalypse Explained 1180 Emanuel Swedenborg
Since most of us are born with an abundance of natural desires, it
isn’t strange that we often let these far exceed their intended
purpose. When they drive us blindly, or we willfully demand that they
supply us with more satisfactions or pleasures than are possible or due
us, that is the point at which we depart from the degree of perfection
that God wishes for us here on earth. That is the measure of our
character defects, or, if you wish, of our sins.
    ~ AA 12&12 p. 65
“The origin of evil is from the abuse of the capacities proper to man, that are called rationality and freedom. ” Divine Love and Wisdom 264, Swedenborg
Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to
What we have is a daily reprieve contingent upon the
maintenance of our spiritual condition. pg.86 of BB.

…he now has a new will formed by the Lord in the understanding part of
his mind. The Lord then uses this to raise the spiritual man up to
heaven, though evil still remains in the will that is properly his own,
which at this point is miraculously set aside. This is accomplished by
a higher power which withholds him from evil and maintains him in good.
    AC 5113 by Swedenborg

“And we have ceased fighting anything and anyone……..”
    ~pg.84 BigBook

“As soon as the good of love has been implanted, combat ceases, and rest ensues; for the person is then introduced into heaven.”
    Arcana Coelestia 8893 Emanuel Swedenborg

Those have been helpful to me the past couple of years!

    Thanks Keith,

As I have said before, the Lord did not come into the world just to comfort and pamper us. His biggest mission was to teach us to look deeply inside and find the dirt. We must put our hope in the Lord to give us the strength to do just that. Instead, most people hope and pray that God will fix “stuff” for us.

    Spiritually yours,

The Bible points out that the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt, and Swedenborg points out that infernal spirits in particular call up the evils which the man has done (and pervert and put a wrong interpretation upon the goods [to boot]).

So, your call to your readers is three-fold: a) to be as the wicked with themselves; b) to be their own infernal spirits; and, c) to twist, distort and put a wrong interpretation on the good.

Quite the interesting call this is. Especially seeing as how it to comes from one who–when his polarity is reversed–propounds that love is the ultimate ‘science’. When these opposing polarities are combined into one overarching message, that message is this: in order to experience God’s love, people must be wicked and infernal.

While the Lord did indeed commanded us to cleanse the inside of our cups, this was no more His ‘biggest mission’ than the primary reason why people live in houses is so they can sweep floors, vacuum rugs, and wash windows. If floors aren’t swept, rugs not vacuumed and windows left unwashed, a dirty house quickly results. So, the doing of these things is necessary (if a clean house is desired). But that they are necessary hardly means that they are the primary reason for living in a house.

    Dear Glenn,

When one reads through Swedenborg’s 12-volume “Arcana Coelestia” it is quite clear what the primary message is – regeneration! (However, in the New Church there has been a movement towards namby-pambiness.)

When one reads through the Arcana Coelestia one discovers that the term “house” – when mentioned in Holy Scripture – symbolizes one’s “mind” (heart and intellect). It would seem that one should try to keep everything properly arranged and in good order within one’s mind to attain legitimate spiritual love. Anyone who wants to debate this issue is wasting my time!

    Spiritually yours,
