The New Year is the time most of us make resolutions to change something in our lives. On a deeper level, this symbolizes that we recognize need to change something in either our heart or mind (which is our spirit and inner reality).
According to the extraordinary visionary insights of scientist/theologian, Emanuel Swedenborg, the human heart (will) and human mind (intellect) forms a perfect marriage when we seek spiritual growth. After all, the human heart cannot bond with an intellect that constantly opposes or criticizes it. This leads to disharmony and conflict within our spiritual household.
The human heart or will takes the psycho-spiritual position of “wife” in our inner world, while the intellect takes the position of “husband.” So when we make a resolution for the New Year it is because we sense some disharmony and the need to embrace either a more noble affection (volition) or a nobler concept (belief system).
Spiritually speaking, this amounts to dumping our current “inner” husband or wife. In fact, when we make these kinds of resolutions and succeed in doing them, our worldly partners will probably like us even more.
Happy New Year, everyone!
