Valentine’s Day and the laws of Physics

What do Valentine’s Day and the laws of physics have in common? The answer to this seemingly odd question is that they are both expressions of Love!

This can be somewhat grasped when we give thought to the topic of order in the universe. Physicists will tell you that the universe has unity, order and orientation. They suspect that the force of gravity is responsible for Nature’s “blind” disposition toward self-organization. But the current state of physics has no real grasp of gravitational order and how its thermodynamics produces coherent and understandable structure.

According to scientist/theologian Emanuel Swedenborg, we could find the answer to this universal order not from any observations by physicists but from the observations of our own states of mind. Our minds organize knowledge and information into coherent structure according to what we love.

Two people with similar knowledge but with different affections and values will organize this same material into quite different forms of order. This order represents our subjective understanding and worldview. The very structure of our thoughts represents the particular arrangement of information according to the disposition of some quality of love or affection.

So, what we love gives order, orientation and unity to our psychical world.

Why should we assume that the thermodynamics of gravity has its origins in a similar function—such as the living force of conscious Love?

Scientists will admit, that although they believe Nature’s process is random, its laws are so fine-tuned that one level of order is useful for generating a more complex order of structure. All structure and form in the universe is information, and, all this information is arranged in useful if not serendipitous ways. “Usefulness” is a derivative of “goodness.” And goodness is a derivative of Love!

In fact, if you follow the trajectory of nature and its endeavor to produce higher forms of structure in evolution—which ultimately leads to the complexity of the human brain—you find a mechanism quite responsive to Love. Therefore, in the human mind, the thermodynamics of gravity and its endeavor to grow structure is lawfully transmuted into the more subtle dynamics of Love. The human heart and mind gravitates towards equilibrium and stability just as any physical object moving in the universe—which means that phenomena in the physical universe mirror phenomena in the mental or psychical world.

When one person falls in love with another, this is where our hearts find equilibrium. The Love for another person affects the order, unity, orientation and structure of one’s life in real, tangible ways.

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!

“The human heart and mind gravitates towards equilibrium and stability”. How long does it take in the spiritual world to find one’s heavenly home, assuming one is heaven-bound? Three days? Ten years? Thirty years? Seventy years? A thousand years?

How long does it take to find one’s true love, assuming that one’s earthly spouse is also in the spiritual world and is not one’s soul mate? About the same length of time as finding one’s heavenly home? Longer?

I have read somewhere (though I cannot find the source) that Swedenborg indicates that, post the final judgment, it takes no more than 30 years to reach one’s place in heaven. That does not mean that further growth is not possible – just that the initial, difficult part of the journey is over.

    Dear Roger,

In the Spiritual World we all gravitate towards our heart’s true love. If our love takes us to hell, then “truth” is gradually removed. If our love takes us to a heavenly state, then our “falsities” are removed. According to Swedenborg, 20-30 years is the longest this process of determining the true quality of one’s heart takes. After that, one’s basic trajectory cannot be altered. These “psycho-spiritual” trajectories find their equilibrium and stability in some USE. As we perfect our uses this puts us into new evolutionary (but kindred) trajectories.

One’s soul mate is determined by shared spiritual trajectories – who we are willing to inwardly travel with or follow. Women seem particularly adept at sensing a man’s interior directionality. That is all I will say for now.

    Spiritually yours,

Dear Edward, Thanks. I also take it that before the final judgment in the late 18th century this process could take millenia rather than 20-30 years. I have not yet understood what exactly the final judgment was (except that it entailed driving out evil spirits from the natural heaven AND the elimination of the false heavens in the world of spirits, with the denizens of these pseudo-heavens being forced to choose between heaven and hell). Dear Roger,

You ask big and complex questions which require a “brain dump.” No can do.

However, in a nutshell, the “final judgement” is a multi-leveled event and an ongoing process. It involved a reorganization in the Spiritual World (including the subjugation of the hells), a reorganization of the church (through new doctrines), and the “possible” reorganization of a man or a woman’s heart and mind (for those willing to undergo regeneration). The final judgement that you refer to involves the DEATH of the traditional Christian Church (the false heavens were Christian at the time Swedenborg became involved). Each major “Church” throughout human history suffered a similar “final judgement” and replacement (best suited for the human psyche of the period).

A “dead” church can boast of a large membership – but it is no longer getting new influx and vital information from the Lord’s heavenly kingdom.

    Spiritually yours,

Will there be a “final judgement” for our current church as well? I would suppose it`s likely that we don`t now know that it is coming. And, would be better suited not knowing because we should as the Lord for wisdom now instead of waiting for a judgement. Just speculation on behalf, what does ES say? Thanks for your time,

    Dear Mitch,

According to Swedenborg, the New Jerusalem will be the final and “crown of all churches.” What do you mean by the current church – the current Swedenborgian denominations? It will be up to the members themselves to sincerely engage in the process of spiritual regeneration. It is my observation that Swedenborgians are still trying to find themselves in the post-modern world. I will keep other observations to myself.

    Spiritually yours,

First off I apologize for my misspellings and random word omissions in that last post. I meant by current church all those aware of Swedenborg and God’s new plan. You answered my question nonetheless and thank you. Sounds like we all have our responsibilities laid out for us then, we have the tools, hopefully we won`t need anymore second chances to make heaven on earth. Thanks for your time,

    You are most welcome!
