The Microbiologist and the Angel

Once upon a time there lived a microbiologist named Mike. He was an atheist. However, he was getting uncomfortable with the findings of his own research. It seemed to challenge the notion of scientific reductionism.

The deeper he looked into molecular biology, the more he became convinced that the organic forms he was studying emerged out of ever more subtle information systems. Mike was surprised that such organized complexity increased as he probed deeper into bio-structure. He wondered how reverse entropy and increased organization could be found on such a primal level of nature. Quantum physics suggested to him that on the micro-scales of atoms and subatomic particles, reality was indeterminate, wacky and no longer followed classical rules. How could such a seemingly turbulent realm offer ordered and oriented structure?

Suddenly an angel appeared in the middle of Mike’s laboratory!

“How did you get pass security?” asked the startled scientist.

“Easy. I come from a world that is so fundamental that it is beyond even time and space. Let me introduce myself to you. My name is Andrew and I am an angel of God.”

Mike thought that perhaps his brain was overworked and thus was imagining things that were not really there.

“I am not only real, I have been sent here to give you new insights on the profound depth of complex organization in this universe. Angels from heaven, like myself, are living proof that the information systems responsible for ordered structure operate in non-physical realms as well,” said the celestial visitor.

“I definitely need to get some sleep,” said Mike as he tried to shake the cobwebs from his disbelieving brain. But the angel’s strategy was to pierce Mike’s scientific intellect.

“The problem with your research is not only that you need instruments with higher powers of magnification—you need to tap into higher parts of the brain and mind that operate from the very same subtle scale as the information systems you seek. These information systems actually are psycho-spiritual forms and structures.

“Gee, you sound more like a scientist than an angelic being!” exclaimed Mike. “However, there is nothing about religion that promotes true knowledge and increased understanding of how things really work. Rather, It is all based on faith. As scientists, we are constantly discovering new things about reality. What can religion offer to an inquisitive mind that hungers for rational knowledge?”

“I am here to show you the rational science that is hidden behind the Lord God’s Infinite wisdom.” With that said, the angel placed a copy of a Bible onto Mike’s desk. “I want you to read Holy Scripture as though you were probing deeper into the molecular structure of a living organism.”

Mike was skeptical but was intrigued by the angel’s notion that the human brain might contain deeper substrates and cognitive functions then previously considered by science. As Mike opened the pages of God’s Holy Word, the angel opened his mind.

“Wow,” shouted Mike. “As I read the words from Scripture, my mind is suddenly able to tease out higher meanings from the narratives. It is as though my mind has shed off the physical notions of these words like one who is shelling pistachios to get at the nut. I am now reading a completely different document!”

“Keep reading,” said the smiling angel.

As Mike read on, the angel opened up his mind to an even deeper level of cognition. “The deeper substrates of your brain’s cognitive architecture that I am now opening up for you are as yet still unknown to contemporary science. What are you now experiencing?”

“Holy cow!” blurted Mike. “From this deeper point of view, the Holy Bible is showing itself to be organically structured. And yet, this living structure is a doctrinal expression of a Divine Being and the Divine’s Infinite involvement with humankind and the finite, physical universe. I would never have guessed that the Bible could contain all this knowledge!”

“You are getting a mere glimpse of what the future holds for human investigation,” said the angel. “In fact, you are now receiving first-hand experience as to what Holy Scripture really means by the eschatological statement that the Lord God will create a new heaven and a new earth. Both your outer worldview and innermost spiritual belief system is now being made anew.”

“Welcome to the New Jerusalem!” added the angel.

So a story purportedly starting people on a journey of truth starts out with an angel spontaneously appearing in a laboratory? Tell you what, if an angel spontaneously appears in my office then I’m in.

    Dear hktelemacher,

Every now and then I get bored of writing blog posts from the left side of my brain. Some of my readers also appreciate having ideas being communicated in unexpected and imaginative new ways. Was there something about what the angel said that you have particular issues with?

    Spiritually yours,

    • hktelemacher says:

Definitely credit for creativity. As for particular issues, probably nothing you haven’t heard before. Scientists have more atheists by percentage than the general population . . . statistically speaking the more likely story is exactly opposite to this one, a scientist raised Christian falls away from the faith.

    Dear hktelemacher,

Your comments are appreciated but the science/religion debate is about to change. New theological information is being introduced to the world. These ideas will allow science and theology to be unified! My blog posts and books are helping to get these novice, game-changing ideas out into the public.

Everything I’ve seen so far in that area–merging science and religion–is some variant of God of the Gaps–untestable propositions that don’t even qualify as scientific hypotheses, don’t have predictive qualities, and generally rely on the idea that there is something we haven’t *yet* been able to test, measure or experimentally verify. Some are purely negative propositions–the scientific method has not yet been able to reproduce the initial conditions from which non-life became life therefore God, see also the creation of the universe. “Irreducible Complexity” is another example, which doesn’t even get to the test, measure or experiment stage because there literally is nothing scientific about it. Someone came up with an idea about Irreducible Complexity, but every attempt to turn it into something quantifiable has turned into an unsupported mush of arbitrary calculations. So if you have something the world hasn’t seen yet, well, as unlikely as that seems to me I say more power to you.

        Dear hktelemacher,

The purpose of this blog site is to draw attention to my books. The merging of science and religion requires nothing less than a book. “Proving God” has recently won three awards and offers a unifying model that has both explanatory and predictive powers.

Dear Edward, Besides it plain and parabolic meanings, the Bible is also (to Swedenborgians) a coded message or a set of coded messages. The key for decrypting this code is found in Swedenborg’s writings.

Unfortunately, Swedenborg deciphered only three Bible books in detail – Genesis, Exodus and Revelation.

Also, his key is too voluminous for ordinary Christians to use during Bible study. I have nothing against the volume and depth of the Heavenly Doctrines. Written in Latin, they are for scholars and the better educated person with plenty of time.

Is someone going to paraphrase this code so that ordinary folks can decode this Bible code, or are we to use our own imagination (as is implied in your post) to decipher the text?

    Hi Roger,

The knowledge of correspondences is not simply a code. It offers the human mind a way to ascend to higher levels of reality. While Swedenborg translated Genesis, Exodus and Revelation into these elevated meanings he also offers similar treatments to many passages of the New Testament.

Ordinary people tend to make use only of their worldly/corporeal minds. Physiologically speaking, this lower (and habitual) level of the human psyche only involves superficial modifications within the organic substances of neurons. Understanding deeper secrets requires even deeper substrates of our neural architecture to become activated. Ordinary people (even many Swedenborgians) are oblivious to this reality.

Goat-herders can tap into these subtle levels of cognition easier than a modern scholar! We do not have a full grasp of how far the human psyche has atrophied over thousands of years. Furthermore, few people would believe it. “Cavemen” understood this code better than we do!

    Spiritually yours,
