Swedenborg’s World Series

I am not talking about the Fall Classic in baseball. However, this blog post is about how scientist/theologian, Emanuel Swedenborg “hit one out of the park” when it came to describing the laws of the universe.

I hope and pray that Swedenborg’s “World Series” will someday replace baseball’s World Series as the national (and global) pastime!

Swedenborg’s investigations of nature revealed that everything consists of a series of processes and everything is itself a unit of a larger process and series. For instance, a tree serves as a unit within an organic process of the larger cyclic ecosystem. but contains within its own structure the same cyclic patterning principle. Therefore a tree, considered as a comprehensive whole, consists of a series of intermediate steps that, like a circle, returns to its beginnings—such as, seed-root-stem-branch-leaf-flower-fruit-seed.

When Swedenborg moved from the physical sciences to human psychology, he again discovered the same patterning principle of this series within the human intellect: sensation (from the outside world)-imagination-thought-judgment-choice-will-determination towards action-action in the outside world.

Even more amazing, Swedenborg discovered that these same series and universal patterning principles are represented within the order and structure of the narratives contained in God’s Holy Word! This series is communicated most clearly by the Seven-Day Creation story in Genesis, which acts as the template for the unfolding of the biblical stories that follow.

This universal patterning principle is mathematically precise, because each step in the process has to have its trajectory and equilibrium be harmonically subordinated and coordinated so that the end process (result) corresponds perfectly to its beginning (first principle).

Contemporary physicists accept the notion that the world is unified and that all its laws must be internally consistent, but Swedenborg’s model for the profound fine-tuning of the universe is too much for them to bear and would most likely bring down their academic towers.

Because the Lord God is the center of the universe, all created things act as centers where forces terminate, transform and are promoted towards other centers in order to form a coherent and full series. These centers or boundaries of action are actually successive centers of gravity (equilibrium). Since all existing things contain this mathematically precise blueprint for continuity, each created unit or center in a series of this Divine gyre represents within it, both things prior and its future progeny, as if both were perpetually present!

This system is the Mind of God.

Swedenborg’s scientific ideas, while God-focused, are seen by many of those who study his vast writings, as unnecessary compared to his theology (in spite of the fact that his concept of series is extended to his theology). But since science is the actual religion of the post-modern world, I believe that it will be Swedenborg’s unification of science and theology that will turn heads in the 21st century—like fans at a stadium watching a baseball fly over the home run wall!
