As a result, I began looking for new ways to write about Swedenborg’s ideas. During this process of experimental writing, my mind also became “sensitized” not just to what the Swedish sage was saying, but also to what he was doing.
History has it that in the spring of 1745, Swedenborg was eating a hearty meal at an English inn. While sitting at the table, his mind was contemplating the reality of deeper levels of meaning within the stories of Holy Scripture. A man suddenly appeared out from the shadows of the Inn and told him, “Stop eating so much.” Later at his apartment, he learned that this stranger was the Lord God of heaven! Swedenborg was about to be introduced to life in the spiritual world and angelic wisdom. The Lord had commissioned him to write about these things so that they could be revealed to the world.
It was several years later that he began to write the Arcana Coelestia (Secrets of Heaven). He indeed wrote on other spiritual topics during this interval of time, but my reading of these works gave me a feeling he was still trying to find his spiritual “feet” and had not yet completed the required process of personal purification.
I am intrigued that he changed his diet after this divine intervention at the Inn. He had already been warned a year before about having a “good bill of health,” and was willing to clean his mental slate and admit (as a successful scientist) that he knew nothing. He had reached a point in his search for truth that he no longer wanted to learn from the world (and receive its awards) but from the Lord God alone.
In spite of this sincere humility he still had to change his physical diet and eat less.
I believe it has to do with the fact that Swedenborg needed several more years of purification before he could begin his official duty as a theologian ushering in a new dispensation from the Lord. Since Swedenborg had his spiritual senses opened up to be able to observe and speak with angels in heaven, while still being in a physical body, this meant purifying his blood. The blood is more easily purified in the human body when it is less loaded down with heavy, terrestrial aliments.
What I like about this bio-oriented harmonizing and purification of one’s inner being is that it offers a more visceral grasp of spiritual salvation. However, a complete anatomical understanding of spiritual evolution also includes the knowledge that within the red blood and deeper structures of the neuron are rarefied substances, which constitute two higher forms of “blood.” One is a bio-magnetic fluid, and the other is the external blood of the soul (created of substances from the Spiritual Sun in heaven). All three species of human blood are purified in humans by the process of spiritual regeneration.
My book Proving God offers a fresh approach to understanding Swedenborg’s revelations concerning human salvation by including additional details about these distinct types of blood.
