If you end up in Hell, it will be for a good cause!

It would be impossible to make sense of the anti-intuitive title for this blog post unless you were familiar with the spiritual ideas of scientist/theologian Emanuel Swedenborg. It was revealed to him that the spiritual world was organized into societies that were analogous to the organs and viscera of the human body. In this way, ultimate reality consists of pure usefulness and cosmic sharing.

A person finds his or her place in this spiritual realm according to the utility and helpfulness they can bring to this bio-holistic system of mutual love—and not just in the religion they profess.

Swedenborg was able to observe that after a person dies on earth, they enter this non-physical organic realm just as food enters and is prepared by the human body. In the same way that terrestrial food is broken down and metabolized in the human body by enzymes, a novice spirit’s quality when entering the spiritual world is determined by the scrutiny of angels. In this way, the human spirit is justly processed and organically directed to the place where he or she can be most beneficial for the whole heavenly system.

Unfortunately, those individuals who resist the influences of God’s angels cannot be properly prepared for life in heaven and are eventually jettisoned out of this grand organic body and towards the hells, much like a bowel movement.

But the lives of such individuals did not simply go to waste. During the “digestive” process by which the quality of an individual’s heart and mind is being determined, the Lord God wisely makes use of these non-cooperating souls for the eternal purpose of preserving divine order. This order is simultaneously directed at the hearts and minds of those back on earth.

Swedenborg also discovered that the spiritual plane is intimately connected to the mental plane of terrestrial humans. They influence each other. God governs both worlds and makes use of souls that are gravitating towards hell to act as negative compulsions and temptations within a person’s mind on earth. Thus, hellish souls are actually used to help preserve cosmic equilibrium and human free will. If a human resists these negative spiritual influences in favor of angelic influences, this becomes useful in preparing that individual for a heavenly life. If a person continually gives in to such negative compulsions and rejects God’s tenets of love, this also becomes useful in determining one’s eternal abode. This is how order is maintained on the deepest levels of reality.

God will make the best use of you one way or another! Choose wisely!

  1. I struggle with the idea of Hell. What do you think it would look like? I don’t see any of that here. My vision of hell would be an eternity alone.

    • thegodguy says:

Your vision of hell is not far off if you consider that being alone comes from a self-centered nature. Remember that the spiritual realm is not physical and therefore is determined by the qualities of one’s heart and mind. Heaven and hell are not places you go to but what you become!

The world is in need of a new understanding of heaven and hell – such as the unique ideas offered by Emanuel Swedenborg.

  3. Rob says:

Why is “free will” so darn important? After all, infants who die, everyone of them, go to heaven. Is there any free will involved there?

    • thegodguy says:

      Dear Rob,

Infants and children go to heaven because they are in innocence. When we grow up and are rational mind kicks in we need free will in order to embrace innocence again as a conscious choice. However, children are not perfected in heaven as much as those who grew up and had their “free will” tested by the allurements of the physical world.

      Spiritually yours,
