Angels are just as evil as devils

The above headline may at first seem anti-intuitive but if you believe that all good and truth comes from the Lord God, it cannot be otherwise.

According to scientist/theologian Emanuel Swedenborg, all angels and devils come from the human race. They are all created finite beings and get their life from the One Infinite God of heaven and earth.

Compared to God, all humans are flawed in heart and mind. However, even in the process of spiritual salvation, evil is never taken away from any individual. But with angels, these various imperfections and their compulsions are mercifully withheld by the Lord and placed at the circumference of their lives. For devils, these negative traits remain at the center of their lives as centers of initiative.

Devils use their evil intentions for deception. Angels use their evils for humility.

The worst worldview for a person to embrace is to believe—constitutionally—that life and goodness emanates from himself—or herself. Therefore, genuine spiritual enlightenment cannot occur without some rude awakening and “balloon-popping.”

Our individual sense of “selfhood” (proprium) was a gift by the Lord God, in order that we could each be kept in freedom to make life choices. Therefore, this sense of self is a necessary illusion. And those who choose to become God’s angels and live eternally in heaven can perceive firsthand just how the Creator fills their souls with life force and love.

(That is why doing the Lord’s Will is the true path towards obtaining individuality. God knows our true destiny, but we choose our ultimate fate.)

Skeptics in the other world are sometimes allowed to experience what happens when God removes His Divine influence for just a moment—causing those very individuals to immediately collapse. They are revived as soon as this Divine influence returns.

This notion of “living in an illusion” is not easily embraced in today’s human society. But human self-importance (egoism) is why so many things are running amuck in all human affairs.

Gosh, don’t you wonder how Swedenborg knew all this stuff? Did he have some private communication with The Big Guy? Or did he – gasp! – just make it up? Frankly, a lot of this sounds like just so much hooey. “Doing God’s will is the path to individuality?” Really? Does that even make sense?

After studying Swedenborg for several decades I believe he makes a lot of sense. If you don’t believe in a spiritual reality such concepts are indeed challenging to the terrestrial intellect.

      Spiritually yours,

  2. Matthew says:

I’ve been struck recently by the idea that you cannot claim to acknowledge that all good is from God without at the same time acknowledging that all evil is from self. One of my favorite illustrations of this: “These spirits with whom I had just conversed were from the northern part of their world. Then I was taken to others who were from the western part. They too wanted to investigate who I was and what sort of person, and said straight off that there was nothing but evil in me. They thought this would deter me from going any closer. I realised that they started by saying this to all comers; but I was able to reply that I was well aware of that fact, and that likewise there was nothing but evil in them, since everyone acquires evil by birth. So whatever comes from a person, spirit or angel as from his own or the self is nothing but evil, all good in anyone being from the Lord. From this they realised that I was in possession of the truth and they allowed me to talk with them.” (Swedenborg – Earths in the Universe 170)

I do not think Swedenborg made it up. His experiences are genuine, and his insights are stupendous. Like Edward, I struggled for answers within ordinary Christendom until I found Swedenborg. And while I continue to be an “ordinary Christian” rather than a professed “new churchman”, I am enlightened by Swedenborg’s insights which make my ordinary Christianity much more meaningful to me. And I do not flaunt my Swedenborgian penchant, and I do not “cast my pearls before swine”. To use an analogy from Physics – Not all can deal with or use Einstein’s relativity, but all need to use Newton’s approximations for terrestrial reality.

Having said that – I do not take everything in Swedenborg literally. There are intelligent humanoid aliens in the vast physical plane, and alien spirits in the spiritual realm. But, sorry Swedenborg, there are none on Jupiter or Saturn! But I do not get waylaid by details such as these. The spiritual sense of Earths in the Universe still holds.,

      Dear Roger,

Thank you for your comments. Not everything Swedenborg said can be verified. There are some topics that will only be settled after we leave the physical plane and enter the spiritual realm. Swedenborg did say that we could take our important questions into the Spiritual world and get answers!

      Spiritually yours,

I’m glad I came across this. I have had an experience of an angel and it has made things in my life worse, not better therefore I agree that angels can be as evil as devils.

    • thegodguy says:

      Dear Mary,

All angels come from the human race and have flaws that are removed throughout an eternity by God. At least they accept their predicament. Only you can make your life better!

      Spiritually yours,
