The difference between magic and miracles

Magic and miracles are related topics. Both phenomena make use of the fact that the physical world of nature is an analog or mirror image of the non-material spiritual world. This correspondence between the two worlds makes it possible for higher laws and forces to manifest on the level of lower laws and forces.

But according to scientist/theologian Emanuel Swedenborg, the difference between magic and miracles is like night and day.

Magic is a manipulation of the relationship between the terrestrial and spiritual realms merely for worldly purposes. Divine miracles creatively exploit this relationship for the sake of human salvation.

Swedenborg maintained that the ancient Egyptians had this cosmic knowledge but over time it deteriorated into magic as they became more worldly and sought power over others for dominance and self-gain. This is why magic was used to put spells and curses on others.

On the other hand, God’s miracles (as recounted in Holy Scripture) healed people from various diseases or were used to get humans back on the right track—not simply as a show of divine force. Furthermore, miracles also contained a spiritual element of salvation (which is the Lord’s only goal). The spiritual connection (correspondence) in God’s miracles is that they not only pertained to curing humans from physical misfortunes but also to curing their diseased souls (evil afflictions) and liberating them from the oppression of self-centered love and its derivative false reasonings.

While Swedenborg stated that spectacular Divine miracles are no longer used by the Lord in modern times—because they compel people to believe, rather than for them to approach God sincerely from the heart—one potent miracle remains for modern societies to experience.

The narratives in Holy Scripture were divinely designed to portray the miraculous relationships and dynamics between physical and spiritual realities. In other words, the stories of God’s Holy Word communicate all the correspondences between physical events, mental states and spiritual processes.

Swedenborg’s theological writings offer ways for us to elevate our minds in order to interpret these higher, spiritual meanings contained within the literal sense of our terrestrial language. When these deeper meanings in Scripture are opened up to the human understanding, a person can indeed begin to experience a profound miracle, taking place in one’s very own life.

Every miracle in the Bible can happen within our souls!

Both magic and miracles are no more than attempts to explain phenomena not explicable by current science. As science progresses, the realm of magic and miracles diminishes, as does the need for them.

      Dear snarfy,

There is more to reality than the physical world. Perhaps you would like to invest in purchasing my award-winning book “Proving God.” Otherwise, you won’t have the proper background to enter into a proper conversation with me.

      Spiritually yours,

      snarfu,

I couldn’t agree with you more. It is sad to see that there’re still people who believe in magic, angels etc. Science holds all the answers, not superstition. Also, i once read from somewhere a line i remember still, and which is one of my favorites:

God was a dream of good government.

I guess you and snarfu did not read my award-winning book “Proving God”. Anyway, I don’t think science can bring about good government – because it rejects VALUES!

yeah, jesus said, only an evil and adulterous generation demand a sigh, magic is an abuse of divine order.

    • thegodguy says:

      Dear Domenic,

Magic is self-serving rather than soul-saving. It is not only the abuse of God’s Divine order but the reversal of order.

      Spiritually yours,
