Evidence of God

In my second book Proving God I had to approach this most challenging subject from many, many angles. After all, you cannot simply drag a Spiritual (non-material) Being into court to provide legal physical evidence.

So one of my many strategies was to illustrate the operation and growth of the human mind (since it is something that is experienced and self-evident to all of us). The hope was to show that human intelligence and consciousness has God’s fingerprints all over it.

Here is a very brief overview of this particular strategy.

When we first come into the world we are merely corporeal/sensual creatures, reacting only to the world from the principle of physical pleasure or pain. (What gives us bodily pleasure comes from the lowest or corporeal principle of love.)  As we grow into childhood we gain a curiosity about the world, which manifests as a desire to accumulate information and knowledge. We are attracted to just that information which best harmonizes with our passions and affections (which are derivative loves of a higher psychical nature).

Later, we gain a deeper desire to find new relationships (harmonies) among the things we have stored in our memories. These new mental relationships lead to a superior mental function called ingenuity and imagination, which is activated by a love for an understanding of the things we know.

When we mature into adults we gain a yet more noble mental function by which we can harmonize and find deeper relationships between the best things we’ve imagined. This more mature mental operation originates from a new desire (love) to find truth. This mental process leads to rationality and true reasoning.

Beyond this comes wisdom (the love of acting from goodness) during our later years from the exploration of deeper harmonies between our best rational ideas. So the trajectory of the human mind is to seek knowledge, then find truth, in order to ultimately act from goodness (the highest form of love). So nature intends for us to transcend self-centeredness and act like angels!

In each case the human mind taps into a new and distinct mental function from a deeper principle of love (neuroscientists are becoming more convinced that emotion and feeling is what occupies the cockpit of the human intellect). This revelation has spiritual significance because “God is Love” and from necessity (and inner consistency) God would make “love” the first creative principle and source of all universal law and order, in an interrelated and interdependent world that is in continuous dynamic process.

Here is another profound consideration that usually flies right under our radar. If we contemplate the differences between knowledge, imagination, rationality and wisdom we can notice that there is no finite ratio between them! For instance, there is no finite ratio between ingenuity and rational judgment. Ingenuity is the perfection of imagination and rationality is the perfection of thought and judgment. One mental operation partakes of cleverness; the other, of values (cleverness does not rely on integrity of character).

God’s fingerprints are seen in this design because it shows a transition from one mental stage to another through infinitely superior steps. Since God Is Infinite, the Divine can only work through steps embracing new analyses of infinity.

So we have evidence of love and infinity operating in our very own mental development. I think the dynamics of love and infinity are powerful indicators of a Divine Creator operating in the universe and in our lives.

A researcher (on BookTV) recently said that when science truly understands how the brain works, it will change the way people live. I believe this to be true because neuroscience will not grasp all the functioning and complexity of the human brain and mind without proving the existence of God!

At the same time, this discovery will lead to a renewed interest in the ideas of scientist/theologian Emanuel Swedenborg, who articulated the ideas of discrete mental functions within the human mind discussed above.

That’s kind of a curious “proof” of god’s existence, in that (1) you simply ASSUME the growth you describe is attributable to god. It’s no different than assuming the existence of god, just adds another step; (2) not everyone experiences the kind of growth you describe. Some grow up in an environment not amenable to mental or spiritual growth. Would this imply that for them god does not exist?

      Dear snarfy,

Please pay attention to my article! I attributed the growth of mind to principles of Love. Love (and values) is not a topic of the natural sciences – so something other than physical matter is at work here. Love is attributable to God’s divine character not terrestrial physics. Yes, not everyone embraces the highest and nobler degrees of love, but everyone has the chance to transcend their current bio-self and become a better person. Furthermore, my short exposition shows how Love can be looked at from the principle of quantum discontinuity (discreteness) and a multi-leveled universe.

I put forth the principles of Love and Infinity as operating principles of the human mind, and you simply see it as curious “proof.” Again, love and anything partaking of infinite qualities is not a part of current scientific models. Are you challenging the concept that Love and infinitely distinct operations are at work in the human brain?

Since you probably will not order my book it becomes difficult for me to take your “pot shots” seriously.

      Spiritually yours,
      TheGodGuy
