Are there Bibles in heaven?

Once upon a time there was a physicist named Pete who was reading the Bible. From respect, he decided to treat it without preconceived notions or prejudice. He sincerely wanted to determine if any of its truth claims could be substantiated within the framework of modern scientific discovery.

Pete’s eyes were drawn to particular passages from John 1:1-3 where it stated that the Word was God, that it existed before creation and that all things were created from the Word. He immediately recognized that the Scriptures were actually making a sophisticated scientific claim—that the act of creation originated from sacred principles beyond the spacetime arena.

Pete noted that some of his pioneering physicist friends were looking into the possibility that the laws ruling the physics of the universe might be non-material. Certainly, quantum physics was showing that on the tiniest scales things seemed to happen in a non-temporal and non-local manner. So ancient Scripture was quite advanced on that account! But that also would mean there was a pre-physical Bible?

If the Bible was God’s Word, Pete wondered how such a tangible document could exist without having any relation to time or space. After all, its stories and events seemed to portray a historical account of God’s bumpy relationship with the human race.

Suddenly a beautiful angel appeared before Pete. While startled, he decided to study this unexpected vision with objective, scientific discernment and see where it would take him.

“I am here to show you how the Bible narratives existed before creation in the non-material realm that religion calls heaven,” said the beautiful angelic being.

She then quickly grabbed Pete’s hand in a strange way that yanked his mind out of his physical body.

“I am taking you to the spiritual realm,” she explained. “You are now a spirit.”

Pete now found himself in a world similar to the natural world but under an entirely different dynamic. After making some experiments, he realized that his movements and forward motion were not physical but correlated to the changes in his heart and mind. He was in a psychoscape!

“Now read your Bible,” said the angel with a smile.

Pete now realized that his Bible somehow traveled with him into this non-physical realm. He was quite curious to find out how the historical narratives of Scripture would maintain their structure and integrity in this non-material environment.

As he read the Holy Word, new meanings seemed to be abstracted from some deeper activity in his mind. The biblical stories were perfectly adapted to this new realm and could now be read and grasped as analogies and correspondences depicting humankind’s deeper, spiritual history.

“Wow,” exclaimed Pete. “These stories portray the changes taking place during the orderly process of spiritual growth within the invisible realm of the human heart and mind!”

The angel grabbed Pete’s hand and took him to an even higher level of heaven. “Now read your Bible again,” she said with a smile that was full of subtext.

Again, Pete read over the very same biblical passages but now his intellect had the power to take their meanings to yet another level of abstraction and elevation. “This is wonderfully unexpected!” remarked Pete. “Now these same stories that I grew up with are expressing the steps and process of how God’s divine truth became living flesh. Pete could then see that these higher meanings lawfully terminated into the literal words of terrestrial human language. The Holy Scriptures contain within their stories, the top down process of how Divine Love became fixed within the lower constraints of spacetime, through the Lord’s life and glorification while living on earth. Why, yes,” explained Pete excitedly to the angel, “how else could God and the Holy Word be scientifically viewed as the same thing without sharing the same dynamic complexity?”

The angel listened to Pete’s words of illumination, then said, “In the same way that nature becomes more expanded in higher dimensions, the meanings of God’s Holy Word become more expanded in higher dimensions as well. This is how creation gets its template from Holy Scripture.”

Pete marveled over all this and blurted out, “Why hasn’t religion told us scientists about the multi-leveled dimensions of Holy Scripture—dimensions that are even more explanatory than our current 11-dimensional model of string theory?’

“This information is part of the descent of the Holy City, The New Jerusalem, from heaven. Consider yourself forewarned,” said the angel with a serious look in her eyes.

I don’t think you need to go to another spiritual realm to see the immutable truths of the world explained in a different form. You just need to open a different book.

That is not the point. The “Word of God” existed before creation. Therefore it contains pre-space (or pre-Planck) structure. You won’t find that situation in any other book!

Please help me, this is difficult to understand.

What do you mean by pre-space?
What do you mean by pre-Planck?
Do you think the Bible is really the sole book containing the words of God in this world? If it is a manifestation of a greater narrative, I don’t see why other books could not have been inspired by that narrative and appeared on earth concerning the same things.

I have tried reading up on E. Swedenborg but doing so hasn’t made anything any clearer.

You are in luck! These topics are addressed in my award-winning book “Proving God”. It is available on Amazon.com

These topics are hard to understand because the human mind is not accustomed to thinking about ordered process outside of the spacetime arena. But it is possible.

The idea that the Bible existed before creation is based on the opening of John. But the Word referred to in that passage is Jesus the Annointed. I’ve always understood John to be saying that Jesus existed from the beginning and participated in creation with God. What led you to make this connection to the Bible rather than the person of Jesus as the Word here?

    • thegodguy says:

I am a follower of the spiritual ideas of scientist/theologian Emanuel Swedenborg. Swedenborg claimed that God’s Holy Word contained three distinct levels of meaning – the literal sense (for humans on earth) and two higher spiritual levels (for the angels of heaven). The highest level depicts the process of the Glorification of the Lord when he was in the world (and made the Word “flesh”). Jesus shared this special information with several of His disciples on the road to Emmaus in which He explained how Moses and the Prophets referred specifically to HIM! The Holy Bible represents the Word (the Divine truth is the only Begotten of Divine Love) through most of its narratives but not all the canonical chapters represent God’s Word but are the products of men’s minds. Your question cannot be covered in a short reply.

Thanks for that response! I’ll look into Swedenborg’s stuff for myself, rather than peppering you with questions here. Sounds like interesting ideas.

A very interesting story, but I noticed that the question that was asked in the title didn’t seem to be expounded upon. The story moved directly to the supposition that Pete had a Bible with him when the Angel took him to a higher level. It appeared that a more definitve answer was on your mind when you wrote about John 1:1-3 early in the article, but then seemed to move from answering the question, to a story that included the fact that the Bible was already with Pete.

I am glad you enjoyed the story! There is real difficulty in commenting on such a large topic with a short blog article. But I am simply using my blog site to steer interested readers towards my theological books (like “Proving God”) which go into these topics more deeply. Yes, Pete has a Bible with him, but the angel is attempting to instruct him that there is a “non-physical” form of God’s Word in heaven, which contains higher meanings for the angels to contemplate. The physical and canonical Bible that Pete had contains some man-made stories mixed-in with God’s divine narratives. Therefore, some of the narratives of the canonical Bible have only a literal level of meaning. Others have two levels of meaning, while God’s True Holy Word contains three levels of meaning, and provides a top-down patterning principle for heavenly and scientific order!

      Spiritually yours,
      TheGodGuy
