“Balls to the wall” harmony

Some serious thinking individuals have used the fact that the universe was sufficiently fine-tuned for organic life to emerge as providing scientific evidence for Intelligent Design and a purposeful Deity.

Even bolder was scientist/theologian Emanuel Swedenborg, who suggested that the universe was fine-tuned with a mathematical precision not yet suspected or imagined by contemporary investigators.

For instance, it is a well-known scientific fact that once something is put into motion it will seek its equilibrium or center of stability. Swedenborg found this ubiquitous cosmic law fine-tuned to the point of even ruling all the organic processes of the human body, all the thoughts and feelings of the human heart and mind, plus directing all the stories expressed in God’s Holy Word (the Bible)!

How can that be?

In the human body all process takes place between one organ, tissue, cell and another. Each of these organic units function as a center of stability between completing processes.

In the human mind, ideas and thoughts represent similar centers of stability for mental forces gravitating towards some decision and conclusion in action.

The narratives and events described in Scripture represent the Lord God’s ongoing activity by which divine truth proceeds by steps through distinct values in order to complete some spiritual purpose and use. Since the completing action is a mirror image or correspondence of the intended purpose, each step (or ratio) of the process is lawfully and mathematically arranged to produce a harmonic or holistic result. (There would be no coherence, consistency or unity in any process without such harmony.)

Swedenborg worked under the mathematical premise that all concord and harmony come from octaves. Therefore, a mature tree could express a mathematically precise octave through its stages of development from 1) seed, 2) root, 3) stem, 4) branches, 5) leaves, 6) flowers, 7) fruit and back to 8) seed. The Lord’s Prayer also can be articulated by an octave if one knows how!

So Swedenborg formulated a kind of “balls to the wall” model of Intelligent or Purposeful Design. But he would have called it “Conjunctive Design” since it offered a multi-level approach to explaining how all process and laws of the universe (whether physical, mental or divine) can be unified (harmonized)! Harmony in the physical universe, which unites physical process, is itself a correspondence of heavenly mutual love, which unites human souls.

(Also, since it is quite observable that seeds generate new seeds, Swedenborg’s model of harmonic reality has explanative and predictive powers, which is how scientists judge the verity of any theory!)

This scientific approach to harmonic relational holism will become the science of the future. And, this new science will be the unique property of a new, emerging church, called the New Jerusalem!
