Personal freedom and responsibility vs. the Collective

Scientist/theologian Emanuel Swedenborg provides insights into this heated topic, suggesting that we make a thoughtful study of how God governs the angels in heaven. Swedenborg observed that heaven represents an organic community called the  “Grand Human.” Angels function as analogs to the variety of living cells working together in the human organism.

While the Lord God loves everyone equally, not everyone appreciates, responds or reciprocates that love back equally. So individuals have different outcomes and fates—which is the result of individual freedom and personal responsibility. This means that spiritual justice is different than social justice. For instance, if all the living cells in the human body were exactly the same, you would not have differentiation of utility or function. Heaven, like a human body, has angels acting as distinctive cells and organs, which perform various and distinctive functions, creating a most fair and effective commerce.

Truth distinguishes and love unites. Both truth and love are needed for complexity and diversity to emerge for the perfection of unity (relational holism).

The divine purpose of a collective (spiritual community) is to provide an environment where an individual can (if he or she chooses) elevate their life to become a better person or angel. To the degree that an individual accepts this noble challenge and perfects his or her life spiritually, the better the community can be justly served—this is a distribution of spiritual wealth, not simply dollars. Only the Lord God has the wisdom to reconcile or harmonize individual aspirations with the greater good of the community. This is the spiritual marriage of truth and love.

So, the best way to improve government is to take a careful look at the arrangement and functions of the individual cells and organs operating in the human body! When this divine arrangement is upset in our human affairs, cancers appear throughout the system!
