The future of education

RealAndVirtualIn the future, when the human species becomes nobler, they will begin to adapt the education of their children to accomplish genuine spiritual and heavenly goals within their chosen field of study. That is, education will serve to re-connect knowledge with a child’s inner reality so that what they know can serve as a confrontational principle to how they actually behave and to what they seek most in the world.

In Swedenborgian terms, this means connecting our outer and fabricated knowledge with a true sensing of our God-given spiritual essence. Without such a confrontational process, the human species will wrongly mature under the dynamics of illusion and fantasy.

Educators do not know this. Evidence of this unfortunate psychical disconnection and illusion is the human aptitude for hypocrisy and being sidetracked by passing fads.

Swedenborg introduced a whole new idea concerning human spiritual potential. He discovered that the Lord God of heaven secretly stores away all the warm and loving influences a young infant experiences during their original state of innocence. Swedenborg called this sacred storage the “remains” which serves as a mental plane where angelic and heavenly influences can take hold.

However, this secret and sacred operation occurs only as long as a child remains in innocence. But once a child gets older and is introduced to the ways of the world and to contemporary education, this sacred plane becomes covered over by an artificially formed personality. As this fabricated personality develops (through the increase of data) the child’s essential being is pushed down into the subconscious level (the internal natural mind) where its growth stops.

Modern education only serves our outermost personality and permits self-deception to be cultivated.

Religion was designed from above to offer humans a lawful way to return to a state of innocence, whereby one’s inner remains could continue to develop and ultimately emerge as an individual’s true consciousness. The personal confrontation between one’s inner and outer realities is the basis for genuine spiritual growth—that is, being reborn. (This psychical battle is even secretly depicted by the various wars in the narratives of the Holy Word.)

I offer lots of details concerning this new kind of education in my third book Swedenborg & Gurdjieff: The Missing Links.
