Currently, Swedenborgian theology and cosmology is understood as involving discrete top-down qualities in which three-ness, such as end, cause and effect (or positive, negative and reconciling) takes place in all created forms and whole units of reality.
Theologically speaking, this universal patterning principle emerges from God’s three modes of operation—Father (Divine active Love), Son (Divine Truth and Form) and the Holy Spirit (the Divine forward process).
All Swedenborgians are familiar with the notion that reality, including spiritual or non-physical qualities can be put into three boxes—celestial, spiritual and natural levels—one on top of each other. God’s Holy Word contains this same three-leveled architecture, that is, the narratives of Holy Scripture communicate three distinct levels of meaning, all of which correspond to each other.
But this three-leveled box leaves us with only a static model of God’s sacred order and activity.
Because God is Infinite Life, the created universe is in dynamic, reciprocal process (universal sharing and cooperation). This necessitates a cosmic model of organic order, which illustrates how things come into existence through both divine influx and subsistence. (Swedenborg developed a holistic model of process well before Alfred North Whitehead.)
Swedenborg referred to this model of God’s Divine trajectory (Providence) and creative action variously as the Doctrine of Series, the Mathematical Philosophy of Universals, the Intuition of Ends, and the coordination and subordination of things into successive and simultaneous order. These conceptual formulations created a “process theory” of reality in the form of a cosmic Circle of Life.
Swedenborg claimed that all complete and whole processes (relational holism) generated a circle or orb of activity whereby successive events, each seeking their own gravitational stability and equilibrium, were unified into a common equilibrium or harmonious and simultaneous system.
Modern science does not have a grasp of such a profound theory of “gravitational thermodynamics” that can create rational and coherent structure on both the smallest and largest scales of the manifest universe. Swedenborg went even further to say that such a dynamic model of creation is purely God-driven, and can be teased out of the way the human mind, spiritual salvation and Holy Scripture unfolds itself.
I say this because most Swedenborgian scholars are trying to unify his theological works with modern scientific theories. This is a mistake. In my award-winning book Proving God, I put forth the notion that Swedenborg’s science is still superior to the modern theories of relativity, quantum mechanics or the multi-dimensional model of super string theory. Even many dyed-in-the-wool Swedenborgians believe that such a possibility is impossible. They are enthralled (hypnotized) by post-modern paradigms and mistakenly feel that Swedenborg’s science was a product of his era.
Nothing can be further from the truth. (Swedenborg even made the claim that his later investigations were not for men, but for angels!)
The problem with proving the superiority of Swedenborg’s theistic models of reality is that such knowledge is sacred, thus protected by God and requires angelic development (as opposed to academic rigor).
However, my belief that the Lord God wants to ultimately reveal these dynamic ideas to the human race tells me that future men and women will advance in their spiritual transformation to the point that they will tap into and acquire a working knowledge of Swedenborg’s theistic Theory of Everything!
