The biblical phrase “And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying…” is filled with science

Moses seeing JehovahAccording to scientist/theologian Emanuel Swedenborg, this biblical phrase found in Exodus marks the beginning of a new series of unified events that follow the laws and steps of universal creation and subsistence.

Today we would call this kind of thinking Process Theory.

The science within the Bible narratives is protected by a sacred symbolic language, which only those who are being genuinely led by God can decode. But even this symbolic code follows the providential laws of dynamical process (how events unfold).

Swedenborg claimed that the laws and forces of nature get their patterning principles from the trajectories and architecture of God’s Holy Word. The phrase used in the title of this short article is one of those places that Swedenborg identifies as the beginning of a new and complete series of events or comprehensive wholes (like the musical note “Do” at the beginning of each octave).

While Swedenborg gives the symbolic meaning of this biblical phrase in terms of a new perception within the human consciousness of one being taught by the Lord God through the inner dynamics of the Holy Word, this new series goes through all the same distinct steps as every other whole phenomenon that unfolds in the universe. The processes of nature mimic the processes of spiritual salvation (called correspondences).

In this universal self-organizing cyclic process, things come forth from the first causal principles of inner forces to the formal physical world of spacetime and back again to their first principles (just like a fruit tree goes from seed back to seed.)

Swedenborg offers clues to this sacred and universal process as he communicates the deeper meanings of the biblical phrases that follow Jehovah’s speaking to Moses and creates a perfectly unified series of steps (if one is paying close attention).

Everything follows this order. The universe certainly has order and orientation. No process would have orientation or coherency unless every forward process and directionality of phenomena had continuous relation to its first principle. It takes both successive and simultaneous order to create a structured and self-regulating system. Since all of nature is in a mad dash towards coherent self-organization, this provides a scientific model for the existence of a Divine Mover behind all things. (Lacking this theistic approach will keep scientists in the dark about the thermodynamics of large gravitating systems and dynamics of all self-organization.)

The universal science of the future will be fully theological. My book Proving God provides details for this truly unified model of reality.
