The Lord God and my wife are my two greatest heroes

Wedding-Rings-Gold-and-Silver-Wedding-Rings-13The Lord tries to change me from within while my wife works from without. Together, they have wisely conspired to turn me into a prince.

Both know what constitutes being a good person, here and in the hereafter.

Theologically, I can easily grasp how the Lord God would fight for me through all eternity, but noticing such a noble and selfless act in my wife would have gone unnoticed if I had not come across the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg.

Thanks to Swedenborg I have come to appreciate that my wife’s full commitment to my wellbeing has been truly heroic and inspirational. (This commitment comes in spite of all the downsides of my character.)

Only a man going through sincere spiritual regeneration and spiritual growth gains the eyes to recognize and love his true wife. Without this spiritual enlightenment women will only be seen as creatures to serve a man’s selfish needs, then dumped after these needs are met.

Swedenborg insisted that it is a woman’s challenge to take the place of a man’s ego and become the admirer of his best abilities and traits, thus giving the man no need to embrace such self-centered leanings. In this way a woman becomes a wife. By knowing her husband’s strengths and weaknesses, she can act as a force to gently moderate his heart and mind. As the husband progresses spiritually, the wife who loves him advances in a corresponding way.

There is no other way to increase intimacy except through such an arrangement.

A wife serves as the representative of her husband’s conscience on earth.

A man becomes a husband by recognizing his wife’s affection for his most noble characteristics and her desire to promote them. (If a husband fails to notice his wife’s spiritual purpose the marriage is over—same if the husband refuses to become spiritual!)

In heaven, Swedenborg claimed that married partners are able to see similar values and harmonies emanating from each other’s faces! This inner perception is infinitely more genuine than any physical attraction, worldly status or fame.
