Cutting-edge Swedenborgianism

plateletsEmanuel Swedenborg made the unique discovery that we each have three kinds or levels of blood—the red blood, the middle blood or Animal Spirit, and a higher blood fashioned from the human Soul. He first wrote about these three bloods in his scientific works.

Unfortunately, an idea has been implanted within the heads of many current followers of Swedenborg’s work that he was a product of his era and that modern science now trumps his science—and therefore his idea of three distinct kinds of human blood has been scrapped, especially when it comes to salvation. You won’t hear this idea being addressed from the pulpit or in Swedenborgian church discussions.

But wait! What the heck is this? Swedenborg brings up the existence of the “Animal Spirit” in his theological work The Divine Love and the Divine Wisdom, n 423. That means the concept that we have several kinds of blood in our organic system is still operational and relevant. In fact, Swedenborg also states here that in a genuine spiritual individual, his or her Animal Spirit is purified.

I have done a lot of study on these three bloods. The red blood maintains and grows a person’s physical body, but the other two—from their purification—build and maintain a person’s spiritual body, which houses the soul after death.

The terror of this predicament is that denomination building, community building, friendships, hugging, helping widows and starving children or becoming active in social issues does not in itself purify one’s higher, rarefied bloods (because even self-centered schemers and politicians can feign these activities in their outer actions and words).

Only weeding out and sincerely resisting one’s personal flaws and hidden agendas assures the purification of these higher bloods. This purging activity alone is what makes charity, good works and uses truly genuine, innocent and angelic.
